Dear participants in the October 18-20, 2012 Data Journalism Bootcamp in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania,
Colleagues and counterparts from the World Bank Institute, the African Media Initiative, and the Open Institute extend warm wishes to each of you.
We have recently been made aware of a certain misunderstanding about the disbursement of the African Media Initiative-supplied prize money to 3 project 'Team Leaders', arising from the October Bootcamp. The purpose of this note is to update you on the disbursement of the prizes, and to clarify any issues relating to this process.

By way of brief background, please recall that as participants in the October 18-20, 2012 Data Journalism Bootcamp, you had each self-organized into 6 thematic groups, to analyze Tanzania sectoral data, and create separate project ideas during the several Bootcamp sessions. Each group then pitched their project idea to the full roster of participants and experts on day 3 of the training (October 20th). Please also recall that these 6 project ideas were considered by the Data Journalism experts in attendance at the Bootcamp (comprising experts from the African Media Initiative, the Guardian UK, the Open Knowledge Foundation, UPANDE, and the International Center for Journalists). The top 3 project ideas were awarded a prize of USD $333 each. This determination to change the award amount was a public decision by the trainers (in front of all participants during Day 3 of the Bootcamp), to ensure that more than one good idea was rewarded. The remainder of the prize was reserved for a possible award to one or more groups at a later Bootcamp or group meet-up.
Please also recall that each winning group elected one of their own team members to serve as 'Team Leader'. These 'Team Leaders' then provided the Bootcamp organizers with their personal banking details, after having committed to disburse the funds (on receipt) to their team members in any way the group decided. The groups were free to allocate these funds to further project development, or otherwise to spend it as they wished.
For clarity, here is a summary of each winning team, the 'Team Leaders', and the members of the top 3 (winning) teams:

Please know that the African Media Initiative (a partner in the Bootcamp) has informed us that they disbursed the prize money (USD $333) to each of the above 3 'Team Leaders' (Karume Asangara; Victoria Rutakara; and Julius Bwahama) on December 24, 2012. For maximum transparency, I attach below bank-generated transaction summaries from the African Media Initiative, which indicate that these funds were transmitted to the personal accounts of the above 'Team Leaders'. For reasons of personal security, we have blacked out the personal account numbers of the recipients, and so there is no sensitive information on these attachments. However, the date of the transfer, the name of the recipient, the full amount of the transfer (in USD) and the transaction number are available for your consideration.

If you have any questions about these allocations to the 'Team Leaders', or are having difficulty reaching your 'Team Leader' to inquire about sharing the disbursed prize money, please feel free to contact me (cc'd to Loy Nabeta, lnabeta@worldbank.org).
If you are otherwise interested in updates about next steps to continue training of media in Tanzania, please don't hesitate to get in touch. There is an exciting opportunity to re-convene in May to focus on economic and development journalism, to ensure that media have a seat at the development table, as frontline mass mobilizers of information and communication.
I also sincerely look forward to hearing from you on how we can improve communication moving forward,
Very best wishes,
Craig Hammer
